I know that many of the Waldorf schools in America do this - I think the children make a set for themselves during either Kindergarten or Class 1, and then go on to learn to knit on them. I believe they just use wooden dowels and sand them into shape, polishing them with beeswax polish before using them. I think it's a great idea - I much prefer knitting on wooden needles than metal or plastic.

OMG, that's SO natural it's making me feel positively slovenly to even think of buying some:) I say, go for it! At the very least it'll make for an amusing anecdote. Try googling a 'how to'... you just never know, there might just be advice on the subject, or even an instructional on youtube... now that's an idea.....!

Do we think it is too creative to try making my own knitting needle in order to make gloves?!  Can't find the size I want unless I have it shipped internationally, and that's just not what we do...anyone want to virtually slap some sense into me before I go on a mission to find wood and tubing?!
